Will The Earthquakes Ever Stop?

Crack from garage door support** The earthquakes rumble on and on and on. The current theory seems to be that some new faults are forming. The quakes just keep coming. We have had thousands.

Check out this map. My house is surrounded by a sea of spots. I think that a small one that woke me up on Monday night (too small to be on the map) was under, or really close to my house. The house didn’t shake it just gave a single bounce.

There are now a number of houses with substantial damage, including one house, where the 4.9 earthquake caused the house to shift partially off the foundation. Consequently none of the doors would open due to the house being twisted. The owners had to break a window to get out; this in the dark while the house is still shaking hard with aftershocks. How scary is that!

It is hard to convey how stressful it is to have the house shaking at random intervals for months. I have been woken the last three nights by earthquakes. Nowadays only the ones that are big or close to the house wake me. The early hours of Sunday morning we were woken up three times, Monday night twice and last night only once. Hopefully this is a trend and there will be none tonight.

The dog is still frightened, and does not like being in the house. He hides out in one of the cars, which is parked outside most of the time. Locally vehicles are out of the garage for a while and then when the strength and frequency of the quakes has diminished for a while, they go back in. Then when the strength and frequency of the earthquakes suddenly increase again, the vehicles come back out of their garages again.

You can never fully relax, and it is hard to concentrate on things. You forget for a while and then the house shakes. Sometimes it is just the wind shaking the house but you get to be supersensitive. With nights being disturbed we are all tired. Plus it is possible the house might come down on my head at any time, or just slowly shake itself to pieces.

Enough whining. It is just that I am tired. Perhaps I should investigate some effects of stress on the body.

** The picture shows cracks that have formed in the concrete from the support on one side of the garage door. When this ends all the outside concrete will have to be replaced.

[...] Then vacuuming the house, I discovered the water. A one gallon container of water had sprung a leak sometime since last weekend and soaked into the carpet. A gallon of water goes quite long way in carpet. I felt like I wanted to cry when I saw it. I have quite a bit of drinking water stashed around, from the earthquake preparation last year. (The swarm of earthquakes lasted for months, cracked all the concrete outside my house and did some minor damage to the house. See posts and pics, here and here.) [...]
